N95 Mask Methods Tested
Fischer and co-workers compared four methods for cleaning the masks, which are designed for one-time application: UV transmission (260 – 285 nm); 70° C arid heat; 70% ethanol spray; and VHP.
For each system, the researchers compared the time at which SARS-CoV-2 is inactivated on N95 filter material to that on stainless iron.
All rules eliminated detectable SARS-CoV-2 virus of the fabric test units, though the time needed for decontamination changed. VHP was the most active, requiring 10 minutes. Dry weather and UV light each needed approximately 60 minutes. Ethanol needed an average amount of time.
The filtration media included in the N95 is designed to capture at the smallest 95% of particles including a median of 0.3 µm. Even though viral bits are a few orders of magnitude smaller than this, nanoparticles mainly travel by Brownian motion and are effectively carried within the N95 filter via mechanical and electrostatic forces.
